Doctor Who

A Good Man Goes to the Enterprise

So this is where we’re at, huh? I have mixed feelings. It’s hard not to feel at least a little excited about the upcoming release of IDW’s Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover comic book series (available in May). I like the idea of seeing The Doctor trade barbs with Captain Picard or Riker hitting on Amy Pond (or on Rory, because you know that Riker will bang anything vaguely humanoid looking), but I’m having trouble mustering much enthusiasm for this thing. It feels less like a celebration of the franchises or a gift to the fans and more like another example of convenient corporate synergy. IDW owns the comic rights to both of these giant properties, so why the hell wouldn’t they want to maximize their profit potential and nab some of that sweet norm (non comic book nerd) cash with a lazy fan-baiting crossover?

OK, maybe it won’t be that bad. Scott and David Tipton, the scribes behind IDW’s monthly Trek series, and Who comic writer Tony Lee are penning the eight-issue series. That’s good news, right? Right? OK, I’ll stop being so McCoy about this. It could be fun. It could even be good if the writers play to the strengths of both series and somehow manage to merge their different tones into something unique and clever. But if Shinzon shows up I’m fucking out!

David Tennant Goodness for Your Earholes!

by Mike Moody on December 31, 2011

As much as I love Matt Smith’s eleventh Doctor, there will always be a special place in my clogged little heart for David Tennant. Tennie was my first Doctor, and his exuberant, wild-eyed take on the role inspired me to become the die-hard New Whovian I am today.

Tennant sat down with Chris Hardwick recently to record a new Nerdist podcast, which I downloaded into my earholes today. It’s brilliant! I’m charmed to learn that Tennant seems just as clever, engaging, and cool in real life as he is on the tube.

Speaking to Hardwick, Tennant revealed something I found quite surprising: He was offered the role of The Doctor even before the first episode of the new series ever hit the air. It’s true! Tennant says Russell T. Davies offered him the keys to the TARDIS way before the first episode starring Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor ever premiered. Apparently Davies was looking to recast the role before the first ep of the new series even aired. Is this news? Did we know this? I dunno, I feel like this is new and somewhat important info. Very important. Tell your Twitter!

Anyhow, check out the podcast for a great interview and more behind-the-scenes Doctor Who fun. Oh, and Mr. Tennant is reportedly getting hitched to fellow Doctor Who alum Georgia Moffat today. Cheers to the happy couple!

It sure was nice to see all of this “Flesh” and “Gangers” business finally lead to something truly shocking and intriguing for our time-traveling TARDIS crew on the latest ‘Doctor Who.’ Now — for those of us who didn’t skip ahead, of course — begins the longest week ever: The wait for the eagerly anticipated ‘Doctor Who’ mid-season finale, ‘A Good Man Goes to War.’ Can. Not. Wait! Torrents. So. Tempting! Damn you, Memorial Day weekend!

OK … where were we now? Oh, yes, ‘The Almost People.’ Right. Let’s get to it then …

The latest ‘Doctor Who’ double-episode arc began with a fun and insane gothic horror creepfest, ‘The Rebel Flesh,’ and things only got creepier and “more insanerer” with ‘The Almost People.’ This week’s episode offered more horror and suspense — and more disturbing questions about human perception and identity — before delivering a brain-rattling freak-out of an ending. I mean, did you see what happened!? It was just so … barmy! Read the rest @ Aol TV.

The Doctor meets the ‘Rebel Flesh’

There’s nothing quite like a good ‘Doctor Who’ creepfest to punch up a humdrum Saturday night. This week’s episode was much darker and spookier than last week’s zippy Neil Gaiman-penned hour, and, dare I say, ‘The Rebel Flesh’ was the best episode since the epic two-part series six opener.

I’m aware that many of you fell truly, madly, and deeply for ‘The Doctor’s Wife,’ but Gaimain’s ‘Who’ entry, while great fun and ambitious, felt a bit lacking in emotion and bite. I enjoyed that episode, especially the scene with The Doctor flying around in an open-air Tardis, but ‘Flesh,’ with its gothic elements and crackling combination of sci-fi and horror, was more engaging, and it played more into my wheelhouse (I’m a big fan of gothic horror and sci-fi movies).

This was scribe Matthew Graham’s second ‘Who’ episode, and it easily topped his 2006 suburban-set offering ‘Fear Her.’ Like ‘Fear Her,’ ‘Flesh’ was loaded with mystery and scenes of terror and suspense, but this ep offered a full-on macabre nightmare scenario that raised some interesting questions about identity and ownership. ‘Doctor Who’ does pirate camp

The Doctor set sail on a limey, low-budget adventure on this week’s episode of ‘Doctor Who.’

‘Curse of the Black Spot,’ while funny and genuinely rousing in places, felt like a letdown coming after the epic and cinematic two-part series six opener.

But, to be fair, almost anything that followed that brilliant, brain-searing opening arc was gonna feel like a letdown. Still, pirates? Yeah, OK … Read the rest @ TV Squad.

The Doctor returns, bearded

Last week’s ‘Doctor Who’ series 6 premiere left us with a million questions, and this week’s conclusion left us with a million more! Brain…melting! Confusion…winning! What. Is. Happening!?

Steven Moffat and crew hurled us straight into the deep end after leaving our heads spinning with the first half of this thrilling two-part adventure. We landed right in the middle of the story, three months after we witnessed Amy shooting the little girl in the space suit and revealing her pregnancy to The Doctor.

Amy, Rory and River Song were desperate and running from both The Silence and from Canton Delaware and his gun-toting G-men. Their bodies were covered with ‘Memento’-ish marks and, of yeah, they all died in the first act. Died! Shocking, right? Sure, but not as shocking as the image of The Doctor sporting a wild Sam Beam beard. Read the rest @ TV Squad.

Grab your fezzes and Jammie Dodgers; The Doctor is back for more mind-boggling, timey-wimey fun!

It’s been four months since we last saw Amy, Rory, and our beloved Doctor zipping through time and space and bending our little nerd brains with perplexing plots and paradoxes. And judging by the first half of the Season 6 premiere, ‘Doctor Who’ is making up for lost time by cranking the drama (and the complexity level) up to eleven. Read the rest @ TV Squad.
